Elon Musk launched a full-scale social media attack against President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” on X that ultimately destroyed the pair’s entire working relationship.

Early in June, Musk described an initial version of the bill as a "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination." He further admonished lawmakers who supported it, writing on X: "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.

Musk's criticism intensified as the Senate worked to advance the bill. In a post on X on June 28, 2025, he stated, "The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country! Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future."

Musk also threatened political action against Republicans who voted for the bill. On June 30, 2025, he posted on X: "Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth."

He even suggested the formation of a new political party, tentatively named the "America Party," if the "insane spending bill" were to pass, stating: "Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE."

Despite Musk’s vocal barrage against the bill, it passed the Senate on July 1, 2025, with Vice President J.D. Vance casting the tie-breaking vote, and subsequently passed in the House on July 3, 2025. President Trump signed the bill on July 4th, Independence Day.

The bill is projected to increase the national deficit by $3 trillion dollars by the end of Trump’s terms. It heavily allocates spending on immigration control and military and includes tax cuts and reforms such as “no tax on tips” and large cuts to corporate taxes.
