Elon Musk frequently speaks about how he believes a falling birth rate is one of the world’s most pressing issues. This public position has put a spotlight on his own family of 14 children with four different women. Many of his children were born with the help of in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, an overwhelming number of his children born through IVF are male due to IVF’s ability to select the child’s gender. The rest of Musk’s children have a much more balanced gender ratio.
A Male Dominated Family Through IVF
Musk’s family started to grow with his first wife, Justine Wilson. They used IVF to have five children, including twins and triplets, all of which are male. Later, Musk used the same method to have children with musician Grimes and with a business partner, Shivon Zilis. This repeated use of advanced medical technology has been described by some as an "engineering approach to reproduction."
Additionally, IVF has allowed for gender selection, which is legal in the United States but is controversial. People have speculated how a vast majority of Musk’s 14 known children are male and that he is purposely favoring male children via IVF. So far, at least 10 of Musk’s children are male, notably with Justine Wilson’s five children all being male and Grimes giving birth to X Æ A-Xii via IVF.
This has led to accusations from many people, including Musk’s own child Vivian Jenna Wilson, about his bias for sons. She has publicly said that her father used "sex-selective IVF" for his children. As a result, Vivian claims that her "assigned sex at birth was a commodity that was bought and paid for."
