A photograph of Elon Musk and Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has resurfaced after Musk made headlines this summer, attacking Donald Trump for associating with Epstein.

The photograph was taken at a Vanity Fair party in 2014, 6 years before Maxwell’s arrest. Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted the following year and sentenced to 20 years in prison because of her role in sex trafficking girls for Epstein.
Musk previously dismissed the photo and claimed on X that Maxwell had simply "photobombed" him. However, a later report claimed that a staffer at the party witnessed Maxwell and Musk having conversations about deleting information from the internet, aliens, and the world being a simulated reality.
However, another photograph has come to public attention because it contains Musk smiling directly with Jeffery Epstein. The photo was found in Epstein’s seven-story townhouse in Manhattan and calls into question the relationship that Musk had with Epstein, especially considering his attempts to disassociate with Maxwell.
Musk's Claims About Trump and Epstein
The controversy surrounding the photos has especially intensified due to Musk’s public feud with Trump over the “Epstein Files.” Musk has repeatedly challenged the president to release the files. In a now-deleted post on X, Musk wrote, "@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!"
Musk has also mocked Trump’s claim that the files are a "hoax." In another X post, Musk wrote, "Wow, amazing that Epstein 'killed himself' and Ghislaine is in federal prison for a hoax. He should just release the files and point out which part is the hoax."
Widespread Conservative Condemnation of Musk
However, Musk's direct attacks on Trump have not been well-received by many in the Republican party. Lawmakers have openly questioned Musk's tactics and his judgment, with Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) calling his comments "absolutely childish and ridiculous." Murphy added that Musk has "lost some of his gravitas" in the eyes of many Republicans.
The attacks have also led some Republicans to question Musk's mental stability. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) suggested that the billionaire is "starting to look a little crazy," a sentiment that has gained traction. Other lawmakers have argued that the feud is hurting Musk's influence. Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) said that "every tweet that goes out, people are more lockstep behind President Trump and [Musk is] losing favor."
