Elon Musk initially responded to growing concerns about AI-generated deepfake images with humor. As users on X began circulating digitally altered images using Grok, the billionaire tech executive replied with amusement. In one instance, Musk responded to an AI-generated image of himself wearing a bikini with laughing emojis. In another, he reacted playfully to a doctored image showing him as a toaster clad in a bikini.
For Musk, the images were something to joke about—internet absurdity without consequence. For the victims of nonconsensual deepfake imagery, many of them women and children, they were violations that stripped away dignity, safety, and consent.
The issue remains unresolved despite a joint letter from 35 state attorneys general demanding stronger safeguards, multiple states announcing investigations into Musk’s platform, Alabama introducing legislation to combat the creation and distribution of deepfake pornography, and several countries moving to ban or investigate the technology.
While governments and advocates scramble to limit harm, platforms like Musk's X continue to allow tools such as Grok to be deployed with insufficient guardrails, leaving victims to bear the consequences.
